Weather in Hawaii

Hawaii depicts versatile weather conditions on its islands. In fact, here weather can vary even within a few Kilometers. For example, place like Mount Waialeale on Kauai receives around 450-460 inches of rain in a year whereas a desert just a few kilometers away gets only 10-15 inches of rain in the whole year. So you can expect different weathers on the same island. Therefore, when you are planning for your Hawaii Vacations, you must be aware of its weather conditions.

The weather on a particular island of Hawaii depends upon Trade Winds. Generally these winds blow between 16 Km/Hour to 32 Km/Hour of speed. But sometimes these winds can be strong enough to gain the speed upto 45 to 48 Km/Hour.

The Trade winds keep the weather quite cool and comfortable even when humidity touches 80%-85% and the temperature is 30 degree Celsius.

Another winds – called Kona winds are hot, humid and bring rains. But where the Trade Winds are a routine, the kona winds are just an exception.

Hawaii falls in semi tropical weather bracket. The day temperature varies from 24 degree Celsius to 32 degree Celsius whereas during the night is varies between 21 to 27 degree Celsius. So the nights are comparatively cooler both in winters and summers.

At the places at high altitudes e.g. at the mountains of Maui and Big Island, temperatures can drop down to -1 degree Celsius  to 5 degree Celsius. And you can even enjoy snow fall at still higher altitudes of Haleakala and Mauna Kea!

Period during November to February is typically rainy season in Hawaii. But it can rain at any time. The rains behave in a very unpredictable way. Interestingly, it rains for a very short span of time and sun starts shining immediately after the rains and some times it results in formation picturesque rainbows.

Rains can also be localized – i.e. it may rain at the hills and beach may hot have even a drop of the rain. Local people call it "Mauka Showers".

So, all the Hawaiian islands bear micro-climates – i.e. it may rain heavily and continuously for 2-3 days at one place but nearby places at short distances will be totally dry. It generally happens during the winters.

Hawaii, some times, also bear the brunt of hurricanes. But it is very rare. The last hurricane that struck Hawaii was "Iniki" which hit Kauai in the year 1992.

So, while planning for Hawaii Vacations, you should be ready to face the unpredictable challenges of changing weather and always keep rain coat, jackets etc. with you to remain comfortable.
