If you are planning to visit Hawaii - The Paradise of The Pacific - for vacations, then some knowledge of its geography will help you to plan your tour in a better way.
The Hawaii state constitutes a chain of 132 islands. But while talking about Hawaii, we talk about only 8 main islands. These eight main islands are :
- Hawaii
- Molokai
- Lanai
- Oahu
- Kauai
- Niiahu and
- Kahoolawe.
The other 124 islands are not considered fit for human habitation. But these 124 islands together cover only an area of three square miles. Except for Kahoolawe, rest seven main islands are inhabited. The Hawaii state is situated at approximately 2100 miles southwest of San Francisco.
Of the eight major islands, Hawaii is the largest of the habitable Hawaiian islands and covers 4,038 square miles. This island was formed by five volcanoes, two of which are still active.
Kohala is towards the northern side of the island and Hualalai is towards the west. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are in the center of the island. Mauna Kea which is situated at 13,796 feet above sea level, is the highest point in the state. Mauna Loa and Kilauea are still active volcanoes. Sometimes these spew burning lava streams which flow down the from the mountains to the sea.
The topography of Hawaii is very diverse and offers its visitors an excellent scenic beauty.
